Spicewood Community Library Junior Volunteers

Spicewood Community Library welcomes and encourages community members aged 10—18 to become Junior Library Volunteers. This opportunity offers young people a chance to participate in volunteerism, to demonstrate responsible behavior, and to develop good work habits.

New volunteers will undergo a probationary period where they can demonstrate that they have the work ethic and desire to contribute through community service. All junior volunteers are required to have a parent- or legal guardian-signed release.

Volunteers ages 10—13 may only volunteer when a parent or adult guardian is present.  It is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to supervise these volunteers at all times.

Description of the Junior Volunteer:

Shares in the joy of reading;
Demonstrates reliable, honest, mature, respectful behavior with all library adult volunteers and patrons of any age;
Dresses in the same attire appropriate for school (remember that the library is a place of business);
Arrives on time;
Uses appropriate language;
Behaves responsibly at all times;
Assists with and completes duties as assigned by an adult volunteer, such as shelf-reading, finding and pulling books that are in bad shape, straightening shelves, etc;
Becomes a self-starter once he/she is familiar with library operations, and takes the initiative to find useful things to do while working to avoid becoming bored and to gain the most from the experience.
Uses a computer when not needed by a patron and for library business only. Special consideration for other use may be made with the permission of an on-duty adult volunteer.

Required Duties:

Become familiar with the Dewey Decimal System of shelf arrangement;
Become familiar with all areas and categories of item groupings in this library;
Assist in keeping items in correct order, especially the Easy, Juvenile, and Young Adult areas;
Assist with keeping the library clean by dusting or noting other needs.

You may be asked to do any number of tasks. Some will be easy, some fun, some routine. All tasks should be performed promptly, courteously, and thoroughly.

Training in the necessary skills to make your contribution beneficial will be an on-going process. Some of the terms you hear may not be familiar to you. Always ask questions and tell us what you may not understand. The library way of doing things has been long established and procedures are followed for reasons of efficient, proper management. If you have a suggestion, please tell your supervisor; we welcome your ideas.

Levels of responsibility and variety of duties may increase over time with proven commitment, maturity and responsibility. Junior Volunteer duties may include checking items in and out with the supervision of an adult volunteer.

The Junior Volunteer may not issue library patron cards.
The Junior Volunteer may not handle monetary duties unless so directed by an adult volunteer who supervises the transaction.

To make your time here successful, always be aware that a Junior Volunteer represents the library and the community you live in when you serve in your assigned task. The library is a public service organization and, as such, the people you meet will expect you to be polite and helpful to them. You will be trained to serve and to meet people.

If you have an interest in volunteering as a Junior Library Volunteer, we hope your time with us is a good experience for you. Upon request, we will write letters of recommendation for volunteers who have served a sufficient amount of time and within the above- stated guidelines.
