What if everyone in the Lake Travis area read the same book at the same time, and came together to talk about it? That is the idea behind the “One Book, One Community” program that was created by the Center for the Book in Washington, D.C. The Friends of Bee Cave Public Library, Friends of Lake Travis Community Library, and Friends of the Spicewood Community Library have joined with the Lake Travis School District, the Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce, and the local Barnes & Noble Bookstore to sponsor “Lake Travis Reads".

Voting for Lake Travis Reads program took place in April; participants were asked to select one book out of five titles for the community to read. Voting locations were online and at the following ballot locations: Bee Cave Public Library, Lake Travis Community Library, Spicewood Community Library, Lake Travis High School, and Barnes & Noble.

The kickoff for Lake Travis Reads was on Thursday, May 15th at the Hill Country Galleria outdoor amphitheater where the winning book was announced.  The book, This Voice in My Heart: A Runner's Memoir of Genocide, Faith and Forgiveness  by Gilbert Tuhabonye and Gary Brozek, was selected.  Learn more about the book below and stay tuned for more information!...

This Voice in My Heart: A Runner's Memoir of Genocide, Faith, and Forgiveness

By Gilbert Tuhabonye, Gary Brozek.

This Voice in My Heart is the searing story of Gilbert Tuhabonye, a survivor of one of the most devastating genocides in recent memory.  Though now a track star and motivational speaker, Gilbert once lay buried under a pile of burning bodies after the centuries-old battle between the Hutu and Tutsi tribes came to his school.

Fueled by hatred, the Hutus forced more than a hundred Tutsi children and teachers into a small room and used machetes to slash most of them to death.  The ones who survived the attack were doused with gasoline and set on fire. After hiding under burning bodies for more than eight hours, Gilbert heard a voice inside saying, "You will be all right; you will survive."  He knew it was God speaking to him.  Gilbert was the only survivor at his school.  This riveting story will touch you from its first page and offer inspiration for years to come.
